Bio
The Stress are a Greek punk rock band formed in Argyroupoli, Athens, in 1980 by teenagers including guitarist and vocalist Louis Kontoulis and bassist and vocalist Kostas Drivas. Emerging at the beginning of Greece’s organised punk movement, they became one of the earliest local bands to combine punk music with explicitly anti-authoritarian lyrics written in Greek. The group gave its first performances while its members were still around sixteen years old and participated in the early punk festivals held at the Aretousa club in Plaka. Their music developed within the tense political atmosphere of post-dictatorship Athens, using direct language to address state violence, surveillance, militarism, social conformity and the frustrations of young people confronting established authority. One of their defining songs, Athens Burning, was inspired by the violent events surrounding the 1980 anniversary march for the Athens Polytechnic uprising. Written from the perspective of a seventeen-year-old witnessing the streets, police vehicles and clashes around him, the song became an important document of the political environment in which the first Greek punk generation developed. The Stress recorded much of their early material independently. Sessions for The Sound of Insecurity began in September 1984 and continued until November 1985, resulting in a self-financed production of only three hundred copies. The album gathered songs the band had performed before small punk audiences between 1982 and 1985 and preserved the raw, politically confrontational character of their original period. Their early recordings were subsequently restored through releases including the remastered edition of The Sound of Insecurity and Athens Burning I & II. Rather than remaining solely an archival act, The Stress returned to recording and live performance, reconnecting their original members and material with newer generations of the Greek punk community. In 2024, they released Think Before It’s Too Late / Σκέψου πριν είναι αργά, re-recording songs from their 1980s catalogue through arrangements influenced by ska, dub and reggae. The band continued in 2026 with Του ’80 τα παιδιά – Kids of the ’80s, a new adaptation reflecting directly on the generation that created and sustained the early Greek punk scene. More than four decades after their formation, The Stress remain both an active band and a living link to the first years of Greek punk. Their importance lies not only in their longevity, but in their early insistence that punk could speak directly in Greek about the political and social reality surrounding it.
