The playwright, an eyewitness to the Battle of Salamis, created a "theatrical report" of war just eight years after the catastrophe. Director Christos Theodoridis approaches the work as a profound anti-war cry, continuing his artistic engagement with politically charged and urgent contemporary themes. Twenty-two people await news of an accomplished disaster. When the messenger returns from the front, his words give shape to fear: the loss is absolute. Lysistrata Tour 2026

The State Theatre of Northern Greece presents a contemporary stage adaptation of Aristophanes' comedy, translated by Konstantinos Boura and directed by Asterios Peltekis. Elisabeth Constantinidou stars as Lysistrata, with Katerina Papoutsaki, Kraterus Katsoulis, Alexandra Palaeologou, Panagiotis Petrakis, Nikos Georgakis, Giannis Harisis, and Sofia Kalemkeridou in supporting roles. This staging explores how collective human action, expressed through the body, laughter, and shared desire for peace, can counter societal entropy and stagnation. The director frames Aristophanes' comedy not as mere entertainment but as a mechanism of revelation, examining a society exhausted by prolonged conflict. The adaptation emphasizes women's voices as active agents of political change, proposing dialogue and coexistence over confrontation. This production participates in the Athens-Epidaurus Festival.

The play "Independent States," co-written by Giorgos Palumpis and Antonis Tsiotsiopulos, draws inspiration from doctor Vassilis Tsironis' true story during Greece's first post-dictatorship period. The production captured theatre audiences through its rapid pace, raw realism, and compelling performances. It received critical acclaim and established itself as a significant work of contemporary Greek dramaturgy. The play offers sharp political critique, examining connections between media and state power while questioning contemporary society. The narrative follows journalist Maria Theofilu's investigation into Tsironis' death after a four-month police standoff, exploring whether it was suicide or state-sanctioned homicide. Her search for truth unfolds within newspaper offices against a backdrop of state repression. The work examines themes of truth-seeking and women's agency within male-dominated institutional structures.

Aristophanes' comedy Peace travels across Greece following an acclaimed Epidaurus premiere that drew enthusiastic audiences. Directed by Nikos Karathanou with original text and songs by Phoivos Deliovorias, this staging presents the ancient work as a response to war's madness through music, collective action and popular festivity. Written during the Peloponnesian War, the play examines how conflict perpetuates despite its human cost. Karathanou treats it as a festival of lost rural life and a comic, irrepressible argument for ordinary people's right to peace, even against power's logic. The staging features music and collective energy as counterforces to military violence. The production connects ancient political urgency to contemporary crisis, illuminating cycles where wars extend to benefit few while damaging many.

Lysistrati Tour 2026

The State Theatre of Northern Greece presents a contemporary staging of Aristophanes' comedy Lysistrati, translated by Konstantinos Boura and directed by Artistic Director Asterios Peltekis. The production treats the work as a profound political and anthropological examination of societal collapse and renewal through collective action and consciousness. It investigates how entropy, bodily autonomy, and shared responsibility function as catalysts for transformation. An all-female uprising against war becomes a vehicle for examining power, resistance, and social reorganisation. Featuring Elisavet Konstantinidou in the title role alongside an ensemble cast, the production connects ancient dramatic wisdom with contemporary questions. Comedy here serves not as mere entertainment but as a mechanism for revealing essential truths about power and society.

Aristophanes' timeless 'Plutus' makes a grand theatrical return this summer, starring Markos Seferlis in a contemporary, satirical take on the classical comedy. Through irreverent humor, biting satire, music, dance, and modern references, this production asks enduring questions: who truly deserves wealth? Why do honest people struggle while cunning ones thrive? What would happen if Plutus regained his sight and everyone became rich? Seferlis transforms the ancient poet's world into a mirror of today's society, where money, power, hypocrisy, and human greed take center stage. A major summer theatrical event for families, this production aims to bring Aristophanes closer to contemporary audiences with laughter, energy, and theatrical magic.

Aristophanes' classic comedy Peace arrives at Damari Theatre as part of a nationwide tour, directed by Nikos Karathaanos with original adaptation, text and songs by Phoivos Delivorias. This production presents the ancient play as a vibrant, political response to war, employing music, collective spirit and folk celebration. Written during the Peloponnesian War but speaking to contemporary crises, the comedy reveals timeless mechanisms of endless conflict benefiting few while harming many. The new staging interprets Peace as a lost rural world's festival and popular rebellion against the irrationality of warfare. With its satirical wit and urgency, the production addresses ongoing cycles of violence and insecurity. The work's assertion that ordinary citizens can demand peace, even against those in power, remains absolutely timely in a world where invasions, violence and cynicism continue to be presented as inevitable.

Lampros Fisfis performs a monologue examining everyday life details that unite audiences. For ninety minutes, he overanalyzes existence and practices self-mockery, complaining about nearly everything, then complaining about the rest. With rapid-fire delivery and strong audience connection, Fisfis creates an intimate community that lives only for that evening. Drawing on over 15 years of stand-up comedy experience, he discovers hidden comedy throughout ordinary life: chapel weddings, odd children's names, relationship arguments, camping contradictions, morning buffet frenzy, dietary quirks, and reaching forty. His solo comedy shows have sold out across Greece, Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Fisfis founded Athens Comedy Festival, Greece's largest comedy festival.

This contemporary staging of Aristophanes' ancient comedy premiered at Epidaurus on July 24-25, drawing 15,700 spectators. Despite heavy rain interrupting Friday's performance, audiences remained engaged, standing to applaud the cast and creative team. The staging sets the ancient work against contemporary violence and insecurity, presenting peace as a joyful festival of collective life and a powerful argument against the logic of war. Sarah Kane's "Cleansed," directed by Dimitri Karantza, is a 1998 play divided into 20 short scenes that functions as a manifesto for human dignity. In an institutional setting, six characters struggle to find their identities and voices: Graham, Grace, Carl, Rod, Robin, and a Woman. Each pursues different forms of liberation. Graham seeks death, Grace her brother, Carl demands absolute commitment, Rod pursues independence, Robin battles an inner voice, and the Woman seeks salvation and rebirth. Collectively, they resist a society that strips individuals of love, free will, and spirituality. They endure extreme trials orchestrated by an institutional authority, confronting brutality and deprivation. This dark, lyrical, and deeply physical work explores how human beings resist erasure to preserve their essence and freedom.

Aeschylus's Persae is the oldest surviving complete work of ancient Greek drama and simultaneously the first theatrical recording of historical events. As an eyewitness to the Battle of Salamis, Aeschylus created a 'scenic reportage' of war merely eight years after the catastrophe. Directed by Christos Theodoridi, this production features Maria Navpliotou, Dimitris Katalipos, Anastasis Roilos, and Stavros Svingos, supported by an 18-member chorus. Theodoridi approaches the work as a profound anti-war outcry, continuing his artistic exploration of politically charged contemporary issues. The drama centers on twenty-two figures awaiting news of disaster; when the messenger returns from the front, absolute loss reshapes their world. Collective mourning ensues for the dead and the past that vanished with them.
