The Vienna Mozart Orchestra, known in German as the Wiener Mozart Orchester, is a modern Austrian classical ensemble founded in Vienna in 1986 by musicians drawn from major Viennese orchestras and chamber-music groups. It was created to present the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the wider Viennese Classical tradition in the city most closely associated with much of that repertoire.
The ensemble is closely connected to the Wiener Mozart Konzert, a staged concert series performed at venues including the Golden Hall of the Musikverein and the Vienna State Opera. Its regular production uses an orchestra, instrumental soloists and opera singers, with the performers appearing in costumes and wigs inspired by eighteenth-century court fashion. Programmes typically combine symphonic movements, overtures, concertos, opera arias and duets.
Despite the historical presentation, this is not an orchestra dating from Mozart’s lifetime. It is a professional twentieth-century ensemble and concert production that uses period-styled staging to introduce Mozart’s music to contemporary audiences. The musicians generally perform on modern orchestral instruments rather than presenting the programme as strict historically informed performance.
The Vienna Mozart Orchestra has also appeared internationally, representing its Mozart-centred programme on tours outside Austria. Its recorded catalogue includes orchestral works, concertos, serenades and operatic selections by Mozart. The ensemble remained active in 2026 through its regular Vienna concert series and related international performances.
