Bio
Urban Danja is one of the longest-running and most influential independent collectives in the Greek bass-music underground. Formed in Chania in 2006 by Insom, Artizda and Oze, the crew began as a small circle of DJs united by Drum & Bass, Jungle, Dubstep, Dub and the culture surrounding soundsystem music. Over the following two decades, it developed into a wider network of artists, organisers and collaborators with a sustained presence in both Crete and Athens. The collective emerged at a time when dedicated bass events in Greece were still relatively scarce and fragmented. Rather than waiting for an established scene to appear, Urban Danja helped build one through persistent event production, local residencies, radio broadcasts, international bookings and collaborations with other independent crews. Its early activity in Chania and long-running relationship with Fortuna Club in Sougia, which began in 2007, became particularly important to the development of bass culture in Crete. Those appearances eventually grew into the recurring Sougia Bass gatherings, bringing together artists and audiences from different parts of the Greek underground. Urban Danja has never been restricted to a single genre or a rigid membership structure. Its identity is rooted in bass music broadly understood, moving across Drum & Bass, Jungle, Dubstep, Dub, Reggae, Techno and breakbeat-driven electronic music. The collective’s extended family has included DJs and producers such as Insom, Duckem, 3Voice, Unified Method, Artizda, Breacz and Type Zero, many of whom are also active through projects and crews including Ath Dnb Unity, Reggaewise, Deep Beats and BDRM BRDM. Across more than 300 events, Urban Danja has operated at nearly every level of independent nightlife: intimate club nights, radio sessions, open-air gatherings, multi-stage raves and appearances featuring established international artists. Its importance lies not only in individual bookings, but in the infrastructure it has maintained around them. The crew has consistently created space for emerging Greek DJs, connected regional scenes that might otherwise remain isolated and preserved a community-led approach to electronic music outside the country’s more commercial club circuit. Urban Danja’s longevity is especially significant in a scene where collectives often disappear after only a few seasons. Its continued activity reflects years of unpaid organisation, travel, equipment hauling, promotion and collaboration, the unglamorous machinery without which underground culture simply does not survive. By remaining active through changing venues, musical trends and generations of artists, the collective has become a living link between the early Greek Drum & Bass and Dubstep movements and the country’s current bass and experimental electronic scenes. In 2026, Urban Danja marked its twentieth anniversary with a series of events in Athens and Crete. The anniversary celebrated not merely the survival of a party brand, but twenty years of scene-building, friendships, releases, broadcasts and dancefloors. Urban Danja remains an active collective rather than a nostalgic revival, continuing to organise events and support the artists and communities that have grown around it.
