Bio

Universe217 are a Greek heavy experimental band formed in Athens in 2005. The group consists of vocalist Tania Leontiou, guitarist Manos Georgakopoulos, bassist and synthesizer player Nikos Panagiotopoulos and drummer Manos Giakoumakis. Their music draws from doom metal, post-metal, progressive rock, drone and atmospheric sound, but the band have consistently treated those styles as materials for experimentation rather than fixed boundaries. The band’s earliest recordings established a slow, dense and emotionally severe sound built around baritone guitar weight, repetitive rhythms and Leontiou’s extraordinary vocal presence. Her voice moves between blues-like rawness, restrained melancholy and overwhelming force, often functioning less as decoration over the instruments and more as the central dramatic element of each composition. Universe217 released their self-titled debut album in 2007, followed by II in 2009. These records introduced their combination of doom metal heaviness, psychedelic atmosphere and unconventional song structures. Rather than relying solely on traditional metal riffs, the band used silence, repetition, sustained notes and gradual changes in volume to create a physical sense of pressure. Familiar Places followed in 2011 and expanded their sound through ambient passages, progressive arrangements and a stronger contrast between calm and eruption. Never, released in 2013, pushed the band further into bleak and deeply introspective territory. Songs such as “Mouth,” “She” and “Never” demonstrated their ability to move from minimal, almost ritualistic passages into enormous walls of sound without losing emotional clarity. The acoustic EP EASE arrived in 2014 through Ván Records. Although quieter in instrumentation, it retained the darkness and intensity of their heavier work, proving that the band’s identity did not depend only on amplification. The release began a wider collaboration with Ván Records and was followed by performances outside Greece, including the label’s Acherontic Arts festival in Germany. Their fourth full-length album, Change, was released in 2016. The record represented one of the band’s most complete statements, combining doom, post-metal, drone, psychedelia, ambient sound and progressive composition within a more cohesive production. Tracks such as “Undone,” “Counting Hours,” “Rest Here,” “Burn” and the twelve-minute title piece moved between crushing low frequencies, atmospheric restraint and Tania Leontiou’s intensely expressive vocals. Universe217 also developed a formidable reputation as a live band. Their performances emphasise volume, repetition and emotional immersion rather than conventional stage spectacle. They have appeared alongside artists including Amenra, Anathema, Madder Mortem, OM, Saint Vitus, Scott Kelly, Wovenhand and Neurosis, building a position within both the Greek underground and the broader European heavy-music scene. After the release of Change and a 2017 live album, Universe217 entered a long period without a new studio recording. They nevertheless remained active and eventually returned in November 2025 with “Wrong,” their first new track in years and the opening release from an upcoming full-length album. The song preserved the weight and emotional severity of their earlier work while presenting a renewed and more immediate form of the band. Across their catalogue, Universe217 have avoided treating doom metal as a predictable collection of slow riffs and oppressive imagery. Their music incorporates psychedelic space, ambient suspension, progressive movement and a strong sense of vulnerability. Even at its heaviest, their work remains human and emotionally exposed rather than merely aggressive. Universe217 occupy a distinctive place in Greek heavy music because they sound unmistakably like themselves. Their compositions can be punishing, meditative, intimate and enormous within the same piece, held together by the interplay between Leontiou’s voice and the band’s deep, slowly evolving instrumental language.
