Bio
Ty Segall is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose prolific catalogue has made him one of the central figures in the modern garage and psychedelic rock underground. Raised in Laguna Beach, California, he first became active in the Southern Californian scene through bands including Epsilons and The Traditional Fools before beginning his solo recording career in 2008. His earliest solo albums, Ty Segall, Lemons and Melted, were built from distorted guitars, primitive drums, lo-fi recording and the immediate energy of garage punk. Melted in particular expanded his audience and established the combination of melodic pop instincts, damaged psychedelic textures and physical live intensity that would remain central to his work. Segall’s output accelerated during the early 2010s. Goodbye Bread introduced more spacious and carefully arranged songwriting, while 2012 produced three major projects: Hair with White Fence, Slaughterhouse with the Ty Segall Band, and the solo album Twins. Each emphasised a different side of his music, moving between psychedelic collaboration, aggressive full-band garage rock and increasingly ambitious home-studio experimentation. Sleeper followed in 2013 with a largely acoustic and introspective sound. Manipulator, released the following year, presented a more elaborate mixture of glam rock, psychedelia and carefully layered production, becoming one of the broadest and most accessible records of his early career. Rather than settle into a fixed formula, Segall continued changing the personnel, presentation and recording methods surrounding each release. Emotional Mugger embraced abrasive noise and distorted performance art, while the second self-titled Ty Segall album returned to a live-band approach with producer Steve Albini. Freedom’s Goblin expanded across a double album, incorporating punk, funk, hard rock, ballads and orchestral arrangements. His experiments continued through First Taste, recorded without conventional electric guitar, and Harmonizer, whose heavy riffs and synthetic textures pushed his music towards electronic psych and industrialised hard rock. “Hello, Hi” moved in the opposite direction through intimate acoustic arrangements and restrained home recording. Three Bells arrived in 2024 as a complex psychedelic song cycle shaped by rhythmic experimentation and more personal writing. Segall followed it during the same year with Love Rudiments, an entirely instrumental album centred on drums and percussion. Possession, released in 2025, introduced lyrics co-written with filmmaker Matt Yoka and a broader instrumental palette involving strings and horns. Its songs examine American history, poverty, ambition and mortality through warm arrangements that balance Segall’s familiar distortion with a more controlled form of classic-rock songwriting. His seventeenth principal solo studio album, Chrome, followed through Drag City on 28 August 2026, accompanied by the Love Fuzzz EP. Recorded at Sonic Ranch with producer Cooper Crain and Segall’s touring band, Chrome returns to a maximal full-band sound, combining sharp pop structures, punk velocity, psychedelic guitar work and heavier progressive passages. Alongside his solo catalogue, Segall has remained involved in numerous collaborative groups. These include the heavy psychedelic trio Fuzz, GØGGS, The CIA, Wasted Shirt, Freckle and his recordings with White Fence and Mikal Cronin. He has also produced albums for other artists, maintaining a studio practice that is nearly as extensive as his own discography. Ty Segall’s importance lies not simply in the quantity of his work, but in the way he has used that productivity to test different versions of rock music. Across garage punk, acoustic songwriting, glam, psychedelia, noise, heavy metal and orchestral pop, his records retain the same underlying combination of melodic instinct, restless experimentation and fascination with the physical sound of instruments being pushed towards collapse.
