Bio

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group’s definitive lineup consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, with producer George Martin becoming one of their most important creative collaborators. After developing their stagecraft through intensive performances in Liverpool and Hamburg, they signed with EMI and began their recording career with Love Me Do in 1962. Their debut album, Please Please Me, arrived in 1963 and was followed by With the Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles for Sale and Help! During this period, the group became the centre of Beatlemania and led the British Invasion of the American music market, transforming from a successful touring act into an international cultural phenomenon. Rubber Soul and Revolver marked a decisive expansion of their songwriting and studio language, introducing folk influences, unconventional instrumentation, tape manipulation, Indian music and increasingly sophisticated arrangements. After ending regular touring in 1966, The Beatles treated the recording studio as a creative instrument in its own right. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band followed in 1967, combining rock, orchestration, sound collage and the concept of an imaginary performing group within one of the era’s most ambitious studio productions. Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles, commonly known as the White Album, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be continued their extraordinary run of stylistic experimentation. Although Lennon and McCartney formed the group’s principal songwriting partnership, Harrison developed into an increasingly important composer through songs including While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something and Here Comes the Sun, while Starr’s distinctive drumming and personality remained fundamental to the group’s sound. The Beatles effectively separated in 1970 after a decade that permanently altered popular songwriting, recording technology, album culture, fashion and the relationship between musicians and their audiences. Their catalogue continued to expand through archival projects including the Anthology recordings and documentary series. In 2023, surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr completed Now and Then using John Lennon’s original demo, guitar recorded by George Harrison during the 1995 sessions and new instrumental and vocal contributions. Officially presented as the final Beatles song, it provided a concluding chapter to a recorded history that began with Love Me Do more than sixty years earlier.
