Terminal Serious is the darkwave and post-punk project of Italian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Luigi Buonaiuto. Based in Florence, Buonaiuto created the project as a solitary outlet for music concerned with love, loneliness, emotional dependence and the difficult process of imposing order on internal chaos.
The project emerged in 2021 with the debut album Love Was Lies. Written entirely by Buonaiuto, the record combined deep vocals, prominent bass lines, drum-machine rhythms and sharp, economical guitar parts. Songs including Lamb and Disorder explored unresolved memories, toxic narcissism, self-deception and the masks people construct to conceal their emotional lives.
Terminal Serious expanded the catalogue with the Gift for You EP in 2022. An extended edition of Love Was Lies followed in 2023, adding previously unreleased material and Nobody Sees Us, a collaboration with Çağla Güleray of the Turkish darkwave duo Ductape.
The second full-length album, Fear and Cure, arrived in 2024. Its songs retained the project’s stark post-punk foundation while broadening its treatment of intimacy, fear and psychological contradiction. Buonaiuto’s production continued to rely on physical bass movement, abrasive guitar figures and a low vocal register that gives the music its particularly severe and nocturnal character.
Tear You Away followed in 2025 as the project’s third studio album. The record shifted further towards coldwave and new wave, replacing much of the earlier electric-bass foundation with vintage Roland analogue synthesizers and adopting cleaner, more controlled guitar tones. Its lyrics drew from both everyday emotional conflict and classical literature, including Virgil, Dante and Petrarch.
The album examines pride, shame, boredom, dependence, fear and the recurring patterns that separate people from serenity. Despite its bleak subject matter, Tear You Away ultimately moves towards recovery and renewal rather than treating despair as a permanent aesthetic pose.
Terminal Serious continued in 2026 with Every Time You Cry. Across the project’s development, Buonaiuto has preserved a recognisable form of darkwave built around minimal arrangements, deep vocals and emotionally exposed writing, while gradually moving from guitar-and-bass post-punk towards colder and more synthesizer-driven production.
