Sourloulou are an Athens-based Greek music and dance collective formed in 2020 as a street band and established under their current name in 2021. They reclaim a formerly dismissive Greek word for a woman who moves freely from place to place, turning it into the identity of a roaming, celebratory ensemble.
The published ensemble includes Alkmini Petrou Chatzipanagiotou, Vaitsis Charakopidis, Akrivos Zervos, Alexandros Sakalis, Konstantinos Kokkinos, Dimitris Pappas, Angelos Angelou, Sakis Polyzos, Tasos Rodovitis, Panagiotis Koronaios, Vasilis Giannousis and Giorgos Anagnostopoulos. Across the lineup, dance and vocals are joined by gaida, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, tsoubous, oud, laoutoguitar, double bass, daouli, darbuka, rek and electric guitar.
Their repertoire moves through Thrace, Asia Minor, Central Greece, Thessaly, Macedonia, the Aegean islands and the wider Balkans. Rather than presenting those traditions as separate museum pieces, Sourloulou combine them into what they call an urban patinada and a post-panigyri soundscape.
The result is a mobile performance in which music and dance are inseparable. Brass, reeds, strings and hand percussion keep the emphasis on collective movement, while modern arrangements allow the group to move between street processions, festival stages and full-length club concerts without losing the social character of a traditional glenti.
