Bio

Sleaford Mods are an English electro-punk duo formed in Nottingham in 2007. The project was created by vocalist and lyricist Jason Williamson, initially working with producer Simon Parfrement. Instrumentalist and producer Andrew Fearn joined in 2012, establishing the stripped-down format that has defined the group ever since: minimal drum programming, bass lines and electronic loops supporting Williamson’s rapid, spoken and frequently confrontational vocals. Their early independent recordings developed through Wank and Austerity Dogs, but Divide and Exit in 2014 brought the duo substantially wider attention. Williamson’s lyrics drew from insecure employment, unemployment offices, deteriorating public services, class resentment and the absurd routines of modern British life, while Fearn’s deliberately economical production combined elements of punk, post-punk, hip-hop, dub and inexpensive electronic music. Key Markets and English Tapas expanded their audience without polishing away the project’s abrasive character. Songs such as Tied Up in Nottz, Jobseeker, B.H.S. and Mork n Mindy established Sleaford Mods as sharp observers of austerity-era Britain, using profanity, black humour and seemingly mundane detail to examine inequality, consumer culture, political incompetence and music-industry hypocrisy. Eton Alive became their first UK Top Ten album, followed by the career-spanning collection All That Glue. Spare Ribs and UK Grim pushed their minimalist framework into a broader range of electronic textures and collaborations, featuring artists including Amy Taylor, Billy Nomates, Florence Shaw, Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro. Their thirteenth studio album, The Demise of Planet X, was released through Rough Trade Records in January 2026. Featuring contributions from Gwendoline Christie, Big Special, Aldous Harding, Sue Tompkins, Liam Bailey and Snowy, the record expanded the duo’s sound through strings, reggae, rap and more melodic arrangements while retaining Williamson’s commentary on social decay, digital emptiness and everyday frustration. Despite their association with post-punk, Sleaford Mods remain difficult to place within a conventional rock-band model. Fearn’s compact electronic productions and Williamson’s East Midlands delivery draw as much from hip-hop and spoken word as punk, creating a deliberately bare form of music in which language, rhythm and character carry more weight than conventional instrumentation.
