Bio

Satyricon are a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1991. Since 1993, the group’s permanent creative core has consisted of vocalist, guitarist and principal composer Satyr, born Sigurd Wongraven, and drummer Frost, born Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad. Supported by additional musicians for recording and live performance, the duo have repeatedly expanded the boundaries of Norwegian black metal while maintaining a strongly individual artistic identity. Their debut album, Dark Medieval Times, was released through Satyr’s Moonfog Productions label in 1993. Its combination of raw black metal, acoustic passages, keyboards and medieval atmosphere was developed further on The Shadowthrone in 1994. Nemesis Divina followed in 1996 and became one of the defining releases of the Norwegian black-metal movement, producing the enduring composition Mother North. Rather than continuing to reproduce their early sound, Satyricon moved towards colder and more experimental territory with Rebel Extravaganza in 1999. Volcano, Now, Diabolical and The Age of Nero subsequently introduced stronger traditional heavy-metal grooves, industrial textures and concise, riff-driven songwriting through songs including Fuel for Hatred, K.I.N.G. and Black Crow on a Tombstone. The self-titled Satyricon album arrived in 2013, followed by the concert release Live at the Opera, recorded with the Norwegian National Opera Chorus. Deep Calleth Upon Deep was released in 2017 and combined black metal with progressive arrangements, orchestral instrumentation and a broader emotional and sonic range. In 2022, Satyricon collaborated with Oslo’s MUNCH museum on Satyricon & Munch, a specially commissioned, fifty-six-minute instrumental work created in response to selected paintings and prints by Edvard Munch. Released in album form following the exhibition, the composition extended the band’s work beyond conventional metal structures into ambient, ceremonial and interdisciplinary territory. Across their discography, Satyricon have progressed from the formative sound of Norway’s second black-metal wave into a broader and increasingly experimental artistic project. Satyr and Frost remain the permanent members and central creative partnership behind the band.
