Bio

Paul Wallfisch is an American pianist, composer, singer, producer and musical director whose career spans alternative rock, experimental music, film composition and European theatre. Born in Basel, Switzerland, into a family of classically trained musicians, he grew up in Massachusetts and entered New York’s East Village music scene as a keyboardist while still in his teens. Wallfisch became known through his work with Firewater before founding Botanica in Los Angeles in 1999. Built around his piano-driven songwriting and dark theatrical sensibility, Botanica combined alternative rock, cabaret, post-punk and experimental influences across eight studio albums. The band developed a particularly strong following in Europe, where Wallfisch increasingly based his creative work. Alongside Botanica, he has performed and recorded with artists including Love and Rockets, Congo Norvell, Syl Sylvain, Stiv Bators, Angela McCluskey, Marissa Nadler and Johnny Hallyday. He also established a long-running partnership with singer and performance artist Little Annie, producing, composing and performing on several collaborative releases distinguished by sparse piano arrangements, torch-song melancholy and dark humour. In 2016, Wallfisch joined Swans as a touring musician, performing with the band for two years and appearing on the live album Deliquescence and the studio album Leaving Meaning. His forceful piano and keyboard work complemented the group’s repetitive, physically intense approach to experimental rock. Wallfisch has also developed an extensive career as a composer and musical director for theatre, film and multimedia productions. He served as musical director at Schauspiel Dortmund from 2010 to 2015 and later took the same role at Vienna’s Volkstheater. His theatrical work frequently combines live rock instrumentation, improvisation, sound design and contemporary composition. Whether performing solo, collaborating with singers or working within large theatrical productions, Wallfisch’s music is characterised by dramatic piano playing, literate songwriting and a sound that moves between cabaret, post-punk, blues, experimental rock and cinematic composition.

David J (Bauhaus / Love and Rockets) with Paul Wallfisch

David J helped write the rulebook for goth. A founding member of Bauhaus, he authored the lyrics to 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', the nine-minute song most people name when they argue about where the genre starts. He then co-founded Love and Rockets, who crossed over with the hit 'So Alive'. Twelve solo albums and a memoir…
