Nightfall are a Greek extreme metal band founded in Athens in 1991 by vocalist and principal songwriter Efthimis Karadimas. Emerging from the same formative Greek underground scene as Rotting Christ and Septicflesh, they became the first Greek metal band to secure an international record deal, signing with the French label Holy Records and releasing their debut album, Parade into Centuries, in 1992.
Throughout the 1990s, albums such as Macabre Sunsets, Athenian Echoes, Lesbian Show and Diva Futura established Nightfall’s distinctive mixture of death-doom weight, blackened aggression, gothic atmosphere and melodic songwriting. Their sound continued to evolve through I Am Jesus and Lyssa: Rural Gods and Astonishing Punishments, followed by the Metal Blade releases Astron Black and the Thirty Tyrants and Cassiopeia.
After a lengthy recording hiatus, Nightfall returned through Season of Mist with At Night We Prey in 2021. Rooted in Karadimas’s personal experience with depression, the album restored the band’s darker and more aggressive character while retaining the gothic melodies that have long distinguished their music.
Their eleventh studio album, Children of Eve, followed in 2025, combining blackened death metal, monumental production and large melodic choruses with lyrics confronting religious fanaticism, pain and social control. More than three decades after their formation, Nightfall remain one of the foundational bands of Greek extreme metal. The group also supports Metal Music Against Depression, an initiative encouraging open discussion of mental health within the metal community.
