Bio

Mother of Millions are a Greek progressive metal band formed in Athens in 2008. Built around the creative partnership of vocalist George Prokopiou, guitarist Kostas Konstantinidis, bassist Panos Priftis and drummer George Boukaouris, the group have developed a deeply emotional and cinematic form of heavy music that combines progressive metal, atmospheric rock, post-metal and post-rock with elaborate rhythmic structures and a strong sense of narrative. Rather than using progressive music primarily as a display of technical ability, Mother of Millions construct their songs around emotional movement. Heavy riffs and complex rhythms are placed beside spacious passages, restrained piano, atmospheric electronics and slowly developing crescendos. George Prokopiou’s expressive vocal performances often serve as the emotional centre, moving between intimate restraint, soaring clean singing and moments of raw intensity. The band’s name comes from Bryophyllum delagoense, a succulent commonly known as the “mother of millions.” The plant produces large numbers of small plantlets and can spread rapidly, yet it is also toxic. The band adopted this contradiction between creation and danger as a metaphor for nature, society and human behaviour. Their warning-like emblem develops the same idea through an X-shaped symbol that functions both as a hazard sign and as a stylised banner carrying the group’s initials. Mother of Millions released their debut album, Human, in 2014. The record introduced a direct and comparatively aggressive version of their sound, while already containing the atmospheric arrangements and philosophical concerns that would shape their later work. Its song “Evolving” produced the phrase “Rise, Evolve,” which became the band’s enduring motto and an expression of their belief in movement, transformation and resistance to inertia. Their second album, Sigma, followed in 2017 through ViciSolum Productions. Conceived around silence, the record treated silence not simply as the absence of sound but as a state of stillness, tension and emotional paralysis. The title referred both to the Greek letter sigma, the first letter of the Greek word “σιωπή,” and to the mathematical symbol of summation. Musically, Sigma expanded the band’s vocabulary through heavier rhythmic patterns, progressive structures, cinematic arrangements and carefully controlled contrasts between intimacy and overwhelming force. Sigma helped establish Mother of Millions beyond Greece. The band toured with Textures during the Dutch group’s farewell run, performed alongside Ruud Jolie’s For All We Know and shared stages with artists including Pain of Salvation, Leprous, Devin Townsend Project, Oceans of Slumber, Sleepmakeswaves and Septicflesh. Their concerts became central to their identity, presenting the songs not as technical reproductions of the studio recordings but as emotionally concentrated experiences built around dynamics, repetition and a close connection with the audience. In 2019, Mother of Millions released Artifacts. The album examined ideas and emotions as objects inherited and carried through life: fear, homeland, tradition, conflict and other concepts that can acquire an almost ritual or religious weight. The band connected these burdens with the myth of Sisyphus, concentrating not only on the futility of repeatedly carrying an impossible weight but also on the meaning and small victories found within the struggle itself. Artifacts represented a major development in the group’s songwriting. Songs such as “Amber,” “Rite,” “Soma,” “Nema” and “Artefact” moved between severe progressive metal, piano-led minimalism, folk-informed detail and expansive post-rock atmosphere. The record sounded darker and more controlled than Human, presenting the band as an evolving collective whose music reflected its members’ psychology and circumstances at the time of creation. During the live cycle for Artifacts, keyboardist Makis Tsamkosoglou died suddenly in June 2019. His loss changed the band permanently. Tsamkosoglou had been an essential musical and personal part of Mother of Millions, contributing keyboards, atmosphere and compositional depth to the group’s developing identity. Faced with the possibility that the band’s story had ended, the remaining members eventually decided to continue as a quartet without directly replacing him. Their return came with the Orbit EP in 2022. More than a conventional comeback release, Orbit documented grief, memory and the difficult movement toward continuation. The music retained the band’s cinematic scale but carried a more exposed and reflective emotional character. By continuing as four musicians, Mother of Millions did not attempt to erase the absence within the group. Instead, that absence became part of the space, tension and meaning of their subsequent work. The fourth studio album, Magna Mater, was released in 2024. Described by the band as their heaviest and most intense work to that point, it examined loss while ultimately affirming life. Its title suggested a foundational or universal mother figure, while the songs treated emotions as unknown territories and private rituals that must be confronted before they can be understood and accepted. Across tracks such as “Inside,” “Feral,” “Magna Mater,” “Celestial,” “Liminal,” “The Line,” “Halo,” “Irae” and “Space,” the album combined crushing guitar passages and forceful percussion with synthesised atmosphere, vulnerable vocals and long cinematic arcs. “Feral” explored the primal internal voice that helps people confront their psychological wilderness, while the album as a whole transformed mourning, anger and vulnerability into a record concerned with survival rather than surrender. Magna Mater re-established Mother of Millions as one of the most distinctive bands within the Greek progressive scene. It preserved the emotional and conceptual depth of Sigma and Artifacts while introducing a more concentrated heaviness. The band continued touring through Greece and Europe, bringing the record’s mixture of grief, physical power and communal release into performances that often functioned less like ordinary concerts than shared emotional rituals. In 2026, Mother of Millions announced their fifth studio album, T, scheduled for release through ViciSolum Productions on 11 September. Created against a background of global conflict and political violence, the album connects nineteenth-century American poetry with twentieth-century Greek poetry through themes of war, death, endurance and eternity. The album’s first singles, “The Wound” and “The War,” confront the human cost of conflict while refusing to reduce suffering to despair. Mother of Millions describe T as a cinematic metal odyssey born from the tension between devastation and defiance: an album carrying the weight of collapsing worlds while searching for the hope preserved by people who remain united beneath them. Across their career, Mother of Millions have treated every record as a reflection of the psychological and social reality surrounding its creation. Human concerned itself with transformation; Sigma with silence and inertia; Artifacts with inherited burdens; Orbit with grief and continuation; Magna Mater with loss, acceptance and life; and T with war, endurance and collective resistance. Their music belongs broadly to progressive metal, but its identity is shaped equally by post-rock dynamics, atmospheric metal, alternative rock, folk elements and cinematic composition. Mother of Millions do not construct complexity for its own sake. Their unusual rhythms, layered arrangements and extended structures exist in service of emotional meaning. At the centre of the band is a recurring movement from pressure toward release, from silence toward expression and from private pain toward collective experience. That movement is what gives Mother of Millions their distinctive character: music capable of sounding monumental without becoming distant, technically intricate without becoming clinical and devastated without abandoning hope.
