Bio
Mercury Rev are an American alternative rock band formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1989. Built around the long-running creative partnership of Jonathan Donahue and Sean “Grasshopper” Mackowiak, the group have continually reshaped their sound, moving from chaotic experimental rock and noise-driven psychedelia toward orchestral pop, dream pop and expansive cinematic songwriting. The band originally came together while several members were studying at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Their early lineup included vocalist David Baker, producer and bassist Dave Fridmann, flautist Suzanne Thorpe and drummer Jimy Chambers. Initially conceived partly as a project for creating soundtracks to experimental films, Mercury Rev developed an unpredictable style that combined psychedelic rock, avant-garde composition, distorted guitars, electronic effects and dense studio experimentation. Their debut album, Yerself Is Steam, was released in 1991 and established the band as one of the more adventurous groups emerging from the American alternative underground. Its turbulent arrangements and mixture of melody, noise and surreal imagery attracted a strong following, particularly in the United Kingdom. Boces followed in 1993, continuing the band’s abrasive and highly experimental early direction. After David Baker’s departure, Jonathan Donahue assumed lead vocal duties and Mercury Rev began moving toward a more melodic sound. See You on the Other Side, released in 1995, acted as a transition between their early noise rock and the richly arranged music that would later define them. The band achieved its greatest critical breakthrough with Deserter’s Songs in 1998. Created during a period of personal and professional uncertainty, the album replaced much of their earlier aggression with orchestral arrangements, woodwinds, piano, strings and emotionally exposed songwriting. Songs including “Goddess on a Hiway,” “Holes” and “Opus 40” helped establish the record as an influential landmark in psychedelic and orchestral indie rock. Mercury Rev continued this expansive approach with All Is Dream in 2001, an album characterised by sweeping arrangements, dreamlike imagery and songs such as “The Dark Is Rising.” Later releases including The Secret Migration, Snowflake Midnight and The Light in You explored electronic production, pastoral psychedelia and increasingly polished forms of alternative pop. In 2019, the band released Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited, a reinterpretation of Gentry’s 1968 album featuring guest vocalists including Norah Jones, Hope Sandoval, Lucinda Williams and Margo Price. The project reflected Mercury Rev’s longstanding interest in American folk, country and cinematic orchestration. Their 2024 album Born Horses introduced another stylistic shift, blending spoken and incantatory vocals with jazz-influenced instrumentation, electronic textures, brass, woodwinds and atmospheric psychedelic arrangements. Across a career spanning more than three decades, Mercury Rev have remained defined by reinvention, transforming experimental rock into music that can feel intimate, orchestral, disorienting and euphoric at the same time.
