MAZOHA is the Greek-language solo project of Thessaloniki musician, songwriter and producer Jimmy Polioudis. After establishing himself through the English-language project The Vagina Lips, Polioudis created MAZOHA in 2017 as a more direct outlet for songs written in Greek, handling much of the writing, performance and recording himself.
The project emerged from Thessaloniki’s independent alternative scene with a deliberately raw and immediate approach. MAZOHA’s music combines post-punk, alternative rock, synth-driven electronic production and lo-fi recording with lyrics centred on desire, loneliness, frustration, relationships, self-destruction and the pressures of contemporary Greek life.
Early releases such as ΑΣΥΛΟ ΜΗΔΕΝ and ΜΠΑΣΤΑΡΔΟ established the project’s confrontational character. The songs frequently balance dark or emotionally exposed subject matter with memorable melodies, dry humour and language drawn from everyday conversation rather than polished poetic abstraction.
MAZOHA continued to develop through a prolific sequence of albums, EPs and singles, including Μέχρι Που Φτάνουν Τ’ Απωθημένα, ΠΡΤΘΛΤΣ, Βεντάλιες και Σιδερογροθιές, Τώρα Χορός, Ας τους Σκοτώσουμε Όλους και Μετανιώνουμε Ύστερα, Χανζαπλάστ and STRESS για SUCCESS. Across these releases, Polioudis moved between distorted guitars, drum machines, synthesizers, acoustic arrangements and stripped-down home recordings.
The acoustic releases reveal a more intimate side of the project, often reducing the arrangements to voice, guitar, melodica and small stringed instruments. Elsewhere, MAZOHA embraces sharper electronic rhythms, punk energy and repetitive synth patterns, giving the songs a physical and sometimes abrasive live intensity.
Polioudis has maintained a highly independent working method, frequently writing, performing and recording the material himself while collaborating with other musicians and producers when a song requires a broader arrangement. MAZOHA has also collaborated with artists including The Boy and Green Was Greener and has remained closely connected with Greece’s alternative and underground music community.
Through an unusually prolific catalogue and an emotionally unfiltered writing style, MAZOHA has developed a distinctive position in contemporary Greek alternative music. The project combines the urgency of punk, the atmosphere of post-punk and the accessibility of pop songwriting without smoothing away the discomfort, anger and vulnerability at the centre of the songs.
