Bio

Love and Rockets are an English alternative rock band formed in 1985 by Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins, following the first breakup of Bauhaus. Ash and Haskins had also worked together in Tones on Tail before reuniting with David J. Taking their name from the influential comic-book series by Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, the trio used the new band as an opportunity to move beyond the darker, more angular sound closely associated with Bauhaus. Their debut album, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, was released in 1985 and established a more colourful and psychedelic identity. Built around atmospheric guitars, hypnotic rhythms and layered vocals, the record drew inspiration from artists such as Syd Barrett, Marc Bolan and the Beatles while retaining traces of the musicians’ post-punk background. Love and Rockets developed this approach further on Express in 1986, combining psychedelic rock, glam, post-punk and alternative pop with increasingly direct songwriting. Songs such as “Kundalini Express,” “Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man)” and “All in My Mind” helped establish the band as an influential presence within the emerging alternative rock landscape. Their third album, Earth, Sun, Moon, arrived in 1987 and introduced a more acoustic and reflective direction. It included “No New Tale to Tell,” which became a significant college-radio success in the United States. The band achieved its greatest mainstream breakthrough with its self-titled fourth album in 1989, particularly through the single “So Alive,” whose sensual, glam-influenced sound reached a much broader international audience. Following a period devoted partly to individual projects, Love and Rockets returned with Hot Trip to Heaven in 1994, embracing electronic production, ambient textures and dance-oriented experimentation. Sweet F.A. followed in 1996, while Lift, released in 1998, incorporated further elements of electronic rock and contemporary alternative music. The band originally separated in 1999, reunited for selected performances between 2007 and 2009, and returned again in 2023 for live shows. Across seven studio albums, Love and Rockets created a body of work that moves freely between post-punk, neo-psychedelia, glam rock, gothic rock, folk-influenced songwriting and electronic experimentation, maintaining a distinct identity separate from the members’ earlier work with Bauhaus.
