Light Asylum is an American electronic music project founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2007 by vocalist, producer and multidisciplinary artist Shannon Funchess. The project initially developed through different collaborations before becoming widely known as a duo featuring Funchess and keyboardist and producer Bruno Coviello.
Light Asylum emerged from New York’s underground electronic scene with a sound built around cold synthesizers, forceful drum machines, post-punk atmospheres and Funchess’s distinctive deep contralto voice. Their music combines the emotional severity of darkwave and coldwave with the physical energy of synthpop, electro and electronic body music.
The project gained early attention with the EP In Tension, originally released in 2010 and later reissued by Mexican Summer. Songs such as “Dark Allies” and “A Certain Person” established Light Asylum’s identity through dramatic vocals, industrial rhythms and stark electronic arrangements.
In 2012, Light Asylum released their self-titled debut album. The record expanded the project’s sound while maintaining its dark, confrontational character. Tracks including “Shallow Tears,” “Heart of Dust,” “IPC” and “Hour Fortress” explored themes of alienation, desire, power, identity and emotional conflict.
Following Bruno Coviello’s departure, Light Asylum continued primarily as Shannon Funchess’s project. Funchess has also worked with artists including The Knife, TV on the Radio, !!! and Yves Tumor, contributing vocals and performances marked by the same commanding presence that defines Light Asylum.
After a prolonged period with limited new material, Light Asylum returned with new music, continuing the project under Funchess’s creative direction while preserving its characteristic mixture of dark electronic production, post-punk tension and emotionally intense vocal performance.
