When oil magnate John Johnson is found pinned to his back by a massive sword, it appears to be a straightforward murder case. Yet in the world of the legendary inspector Drake and police chief Plont, things are never as they seem. Why was Johnson disguised as a woman? Why had he eaten a turtle? Why do all the women in the house look identical? This British comedy by David Tristram presents for the first time to the Greek audience a murder mystery combining classic detective story conventions with comic twists. Directed by Vasilis Thomopoulos, the production delivers humour and suspense as the eccentric investigative duo works to solve the elaborate crime.

Plutus 2026 Tour

Aristophanes' 'Plutus' returns to the stage this summer in a major theatrical production starring Markos Seferlis. This contemporary, satirical take on the ancient comedy remains strikingly relevant today. The work explores timeless questions: who truly deserves wealth, and why do honest people struggle while opportunists prosper? Through disruptive humor, cutting satire, music, dance and contemporary references, Seferlis encounters Aristophanes in a performance offering laughter, spectacle and truths that sting. Seferlis transforms the ancient poet's world into a mirror of today's society, where money, power, hypocrisy and human greed take centre stage. A major summer theatrical event for the whole family that brings Aristophanes closer to today's audiences with laughter, rhythm and theatrical magic.

Ειρήνη Περιοδεία

Aristophanes' ancient comedy Peace receives a new theatrical interpretation through direction and conception by Nikos Karatanos, with adaptation, original text and songs by Foivos Delivorias. This production emerged from the Epidaurus premiere and traverses Greece to selected cities. The play, originally performed in 421 BC, contrasts war's absurdity with the vital force of music, collective action and folk celebration. Director Karatanos and his collaborators present the work as both comic argument and rural festival, countering warfare's destruction through shared human energy. Aristophanes juxtaposes the violence and profit of warmongers with the fertility and collective wellbeing that peace brings. The production responds to an enduring critique: wars that benefit few while harming many remain perpetually urgent.

The play "Independent States," co-written by Giorgos Palumpis and Antonis Tsiotsiopulos, draws inspiration from doctor Vassilis Tsironis' true story during Greece's first post-dictatorship period. The production captured theatre audiences through its rapid pace, raw realism, and compelling performances. It received critical acclaim and established itself as a significant work of contemporary Greek dramaturgy. The play offers sharp political critique, examining connections between media and state power while questioning contemporary society. The narrative follows journalist Maria Theofilu's investigation into Tsironis' death after a four-month police standoff, exploring whether it was suicide or state-sanctioned homicide. Her search for truth unfolds within newspaper offices against a backdrop of state repression. The work examines themes of truth-seeking and women's agency within male-dominated institutional structures.

Aeschylus' emblematic tragedy Persae returns in a new production by director Christos Theodoridis, featuring Maria Napliotou, Dimitris Kataleifos, Anastasis Roilos and Stavros Svigkos alongside an 18-member chorus. The play stands as the oldest surviving complete work of ancient Greek drama and the first theatrical recording of historical events. Aeschylus himself witnessed the Battle of Salamis, crafting his "scenic reportage" of war merely eight years after the catastrophe. Theodoridis approaches the text as a profound anti-war cry, engaging with politically charged contemporary questions. The production centers human confrontation with absolute loss and collective trauma. Twenty-two performers form a chorus-protagonist on a nearly bare stage, employing speech, movement and music to embody a society's response to destruction.

Lysistrati Tour 2026

The State Theatre of Northern Greece presents a contemporary staging of Aristophanes' comedy Lysistrati, translated by Konstantinos Boura and directed by Artistic Director Asterios Peltekis. The production treats the work as a profound political and anthropological examination of societal collapse and renewal through collective action and consciousness. It investigates how entropy, bodily autonomy, and shared responsibility function as catalysts for transformation. An all-female uprising against war becomes a vehicle for examining power, resistance, and social reorganisation. Featuring Elisavet Konstantinidou in the title role alongside an ensemble cast, the production connects ancient dramatic wisdom with contemporary questions. Comedy here serves not as mere entertainment but as a mechanism for revealing essential truths about power and society.
