Uriah Heep are an English hard-rock band formed in London in 1969, emerging from the earlier group Spice. Guitarist Mick Box and vocalist David Byron provided the initial core, while the arrival of keyboardist, guitarist and principal songwriter Ken Hensley helped establish the combination that became central to the band’s identity: heavy guitar riffs, prominent Hammond organ, dramatic fantasy imagery and densely layered vocal harmonies. Their debut, ...Very ’Eavy ...Very ’Umble, appeared in 1970, but the group’s defining period arrived through a remarkable sequence of early albums. Salisbury and Look at Yourself, both released in 1971, expanded their music beyond straightforward hard rock into progressive structures, acoustic passages and extended compositions. Demons and Wizards and The Magician’s Birthday followed in 1972, producing enduring songs including “Easy Livin’,” “The Wizard” and “Sunrise,” while Sweet Freedom in 1973 added “Stealin’” to their catalogue. “July Morning” and “Lady in Black” also became foundational parts of the band’s international reputation. The classic early-1970s formation of Box, Byron, Hensley, bassist Gary Thain and drummer Lee Kerslake gave Uriah Heep their most recognised sound, although the band subsequently passed through numerous personnel changes. Byron departed in 1976 and Hensley in 1980, while later periods featured musicians including John Lawton, John Wetton, Trevor Bolder, Bob Daisley, Peter Goalby and Chris Slade. Mick Box remained the sole continuous member and the principal guardian of the band’s musical character. Uriah Heep regained considerable momentum with the heavier Abominog in 1982 and later entered a particularly stable era with vocalist Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon, both of whom joined during the 1980s. Albums such as Sea of Light, Sonic Origami, Wake the Sleeper, Into the Wild, Outsider and Living the Dream demonstrated that the group remained a working recording band rather than merely touring its 1970s catalogue. Their twenty-fifth studio album, Chaos & Colour, was released in January 2023. The current long-standing formation consists of Mick Box, Bernie Shaw, Phil Lanzon, drummer Russell Gilbrook and bassist Dave Rimmer. In 2024, Uriah Heep announced the multi-year The Magician’s Farewell tour, which began in 2025 and continued through 2026. Box has described it as a gradual reduction in extended touring rather than an absolute end to the band, leaving open the possibility of selected concerts, festival appearances and further studio work. More than five decades after their formation, Uriah Heep remain one of the surviving links between British progressive rock, early heavy metal and the melodic hard-rock tradition of the 1970s.
