Sammy Obeid is an American stand-up comedian, writer and producer known for an analytical style that combines mathematical logic, wordplay, political satire and observations about culture and identity. Born in Oakland, California, to a family of Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and Italian heritage, he studied business and mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, before pursuing comedy professionally.
Obeid became widely known through an extraordinary run of 1,001 consecutive nights of stand-up comedy. Beginning on 26 December 2010 and ending on 21 September 2013, the project took him through comedy clubs, theatres, colleges and independent venues across the United States. The final stage of the streak included an appearance on Conan and accompanied the release of his debut comedy album, Get Funny or Die Tryin.
His television appearances also include America’s Got Talent and Last Comic Standing, while he later served as a host of the Netflix social-experiment series 100 Humans. He founded KO Comedy, an independent company through which he has produced shows and developed his touring work outside the conventional comedy-club system.
Obeid’s recorded catalogue includes Get Funny or Die Tryin, Orjanic and Social Justice Jihadi. His more recent material combines his established mathematical and linguistic humour with direct political commentary, particularly on Palestine, media narratives and the experience of Arab and Palestinian communities in the United States.
Through international touring, online comedy and independently produced specials, Obeid has developed a distinctive form of stand-up in which complex subjects are approached through tightly constructed jokes, misdirection and an unusually literal, numbers-driven perspective.
