Paradise Lost are an English gothic metal band formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988 by vocalist Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. Emerging from the British extreme-metal underground, they developed a sound that combined the weight and growled vocals of death metal with slow doom passages, mournful melodies and a distinctly gothic atmosphere.
Their debut album, Lost Paradise, arrived in 1990, followed by Gothic in 1991, a landmark release whose mixture of death-doom, orchestral textures and contrasting female vocals helped define the emerging gothic metal genre. Shades of God continued their development, while Icon and Draconian Times transformed Paradise Lost into one of Europe’s most prominent metal bands through a more melodic, accessible approach built around Mackintosh’s expressive lead guitar and Holmes’s increasingly clean vocal style.
The group continued to evolve rather than repeat its early formula. One Second introduced stronger gothic-rock and electronic elements, and Host pushed further into atmospheric electronic rock. Subsequent albums gradually restored heavier guitars and darker metallic textures, with records such as Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us, Tragic Idol, The Plague Within and Medusa reconnecting the band with doom and death metal.
Paradise Lost entered another highly productive period with Obsidian in 2020, balancing the different eras of their career within a single record. Their seventeenth studio album, Ascension, followed in 2025, combining death-doom weight, gothic melody and the sombre atmosphere that has defined the group for more than three decades.
Despite numerous stylistic transformations, the core partnership of Holmes, Mackintosh, Aedy and Edmondson has remained intact since the band’s formation. Paradise Lost are widely regarded as pioneers of gothic metal and one of the most enduring bands to emerge from the British doom and extreme-metal scenes.
