Ozric Tentacles are an English instrumental progressive rock band formed during an improvised performance at the Stonehenge Free Festival in 1983. Led by guitarist, keyboardist and composer Ed Wynne, the group emerged from Britain’s free-festival movement with a distinctive fusion of psychedelic rock, progressive structures, electronic music, dub rhythms and globally influenced melodies.
Their earliest recordings circulated independently on cassette, beginning with Erpsongs in 1984. After establishing their own Dovetail Records label, they released Pungent Effulgent in 1989, followed by influential albums including Erpland, Strangeitude, Jurassic Shift and Arborescence. The success of the single Sploosh! and the chart performance of Jurassic Shift brought their largely instrumental music to a considerably wider audience without compromising their independent approach.
Later releases such as Waterfall Cities, Spirals in Hyperspace, Technicians of the Sacred, Space for the Earth and Lotus Unfolding continued to combine soaring guitar lines, layered synthesizers, complex rhythms and deep electronic grooves. Their seventeenth studio album, Harmonic Mind, was announced for September 2026 and features the full contemporary touring lineup. More than four decades after their formation, Ozric Tentacles remain one of the most distinctive links between progressive rock, psychedelic culture and electronic dance music.
