MMMD are a Greek experimental music duo formed in Athens in 2009 by sound artist ILIOS, cellist and composer Nikos Veliotis and musician and producer Coti K. The project was originally called Mohammad and operated as a trio until Coti K departed in 2015, after which ILIOS and Veliotis continued as a duo under the names MMMD and MMMΔ. From the beginning, the project focused on the physical and emotional effects created when low frequencies interact with higher tones. Rather than approaching composition through conventional melody, rhythm or song structure, MMMD build slowly developing pieces from sustained cello, oscillators, electronic processing, voices and custom-made instruments. Their music is characterised by extremely low frequencies, dense harmonic interference, dark textures and gradual changes that become especially powerful in live performance. The duo describe their work as an exploration of intermodulation: the additional tones, vibrations and acoustic phenomena produced when different frequencies collide inside a room. MMMD’s early recordings established a style sometimes described as chamber doom, combining the weight and duration of drone music with acoustic instrumentation and a restrained compositional approach. Their catalogue also incorporates elements of dark ambient, electroacoustic music, minimalism and distant folk traditions without settling comfortably into any single category. A significant part of their work was the geographically inspired trilogy 34°N–42°N & 19°E–29°E, which drew upon musical traditions and tonal systems associated with regions around the Mediterranean. Rather than reproducing folk music directly, the project transformed these influences into slow, abstract compositions built from drones, bowed instruments and layered frequencies. Their album Som Sakrifis, released by the experimental label PAN, brought the project wider international recognition. Subsequent works including Pèkisyon Funebri, Egoismo, Nomenklatura, Taxonomia and Absens continued their exploration of monumental low-frequency sound, ritualistic repetition and heavily concentrated sonic environments. MMMD also composed the soundtrack for Lukas Feigelfeld’s atmospheric horror film Hagazussa. The score’s droning strings, voices and electronic textures closely matched the film’s themes of isolation, superstition and psychological collapse, while demonstrating the duo’s ability to adapt their language to cinematic narrative. In concert, MMMD’s music becomes a strongly physical experience shaped by the acoustics and amplification of each venue. Their performances often unfold as continuous ceremonial pieces in which cello, oscillators and electronics create slowly shifting masses of sound that are felt as much as heard. Through their releases, performances and work with the Antifrost label, MMMD have developed one of the most distinctive approaches within the Greek experimental scene. Their work sits between composition, improvisation and sound art, using minimal musical materials to create an unusually heavy and immersive form of acoustic and electronic music.
