Βιογραφικό

Merzbow is the experimental noise project of Japanese musician, composer, writer and visual artist Masami Akita. Founded in Tokyo in 1979, the project has become one of the most influential and prolific bodies of work in noise music, with hundreds of recordings spanning harsh noise, industrial music, electroacoustic experimentation, free improvisation, ambient sound and extreme electronic composition. Akita studied painting and art theory at Tamagawa University, where he developed an interest in Dadaism, surrealism, performance art and the work of German artist Kurt Schwitters. The name Merzbow was derived from Schwitters’ Merzbau, an architectural artwork constructed from found and discarded materials. This idea of assembling art from fragments, waste and unconventional materials became central to Akita’s approach to sound. The earliest Merzbow recordings were created using tape loops, metal percussion, feedback, homemade instruments, prepared guitars and musique concrète techniques. Working initially with Kiyoshi Mizutani, Akita treated recorded sound as physical material that could be cut, layered, distorted and reorganised rather than as conventional melody or song structure. During the 1980s, Merzbow became closely associated with the emerging Japanese noise and industrial underground. Cassette releases, mail-art networks and collaborations with independent labels helped the project reach listeners outside Japan. These recordings established an abrasive and highly detailed sound based on distortion, feedback, mechanical textures and rapidly changing layers of noise. In the 1990s, albums such as Venereology, Pulse Demon, Noisembryo and 1930 brought Merzbow to wider international attention. His work during this period connected noise with industrial music, grindcore and extreme metal, leading to releases through labels including Relapse Records. Although frequently described as harsh noise, the music also incorporated psychedelic rock, progressive rock, free jazz and improvisational influences. Akita later became an early adopter of laptop-based live performance, moving much of his production into the digital domain during the late 1990s and 2000s. Albums including Amlux, Merzbeat and Merzbuddha introduced computer processing, sampling, rhythm and electronic sequencing into his work. He subsequently returned to using more analogue equipment, combining modular electronics, effects pedals, metal objects and homemade devices with digital editing. Merzbow has collaborated extensively with artists from experimental music, jazz, rock and metal. His recurring partnerships include releases and performances with Boris, drummer Balázs Pándi, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, John Wiese, Richard Pinhas and Keiji Haino. These collaborations often place Akita’s dense electronic noise alongside live drums, guitars, saxophones and improvised instrumentation. Since the early 2000s, animal rights, veganism and environmental issues have become major themes in Merzbow’s work. Releases including Bloody Sea, Peace for Animals and the 13 Japanese Birds series address whaling, animal exploitation and the treatment of birds and other animals. Akita describes Merzbow as a vegan straight-edge noise project and frequently connects his artistic output with activism. Across more than four decades, Merzbow has continually altered his equipment and production methods while maintaining an uncompromising focus on sound as texture, pressure and physical experience. His enormous catalogue and radical approach have made the project nearly synonymous with Japanese noise and a foundational influence on experimental, industrial and extreme music worldwide.
