Matteo Lane

Matteo Lane is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, singer and visual artist known for fast-paced observational comedy, sharp crowd work and stories about family, relationships, food, travel and queer life. Originally from the Chicago area and later based in New York City, he built his career through years of open-mic performances and appearances in the city’s comedy clubs before developing a large international audience. Before concentrating on stand-up, Lane studied oil painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also trained as an opera singer from his teenage years and spent time studying art in Italy. His background in music and visual art continues to appear throughout his comedy, particularly in performances involving singing, impressions and stories about Italian culture. Lane began performing stand-up around 2011 and later moved to New York, where he became active in the local comedy scene. His early television appearances included MTV’s Girl Code and Guy Code, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He also appeared in HBO’s Crashing and was featured in Netflix’s stand-up series The Comedy Lineup. His comedy draws heavily from his Italian and Mexican family background, his experiences as an openly gay performer and the absurdities of everyday social behaviour. Rather than presenting these subjects through formal political commentary, Lane uses energetic storytelling, sarcasm, improvisation and exaggerated impressions. His performances frequently move between prepared material and direct interaction with the audience. Lane expanded his following significantly by independently releasing full-length comedy specials through YouTube. The Advice Special, Hair Plugs & Heartache and later instalments of The Advice Special series helped him reach viewers outside the traditional television and streaming system. His online work also includes stand-up clips, pop-culture commentary and the podcast I Never Liked You with comedian Nick Smith. In 2025, Hulu released Matteo Lane: The Al Dente Special, reflecting the growing mainstream audience for his work. He has since performed to sold-out crowds internationally, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Chicago Theatre. Alongside stand-up, Lane has worked as an actor, voice performer, illustrator and author. His work remains defined by expressive delivery, musical ability, detailed storytelling and an instinct for turning family tensions and ordinary personal disasters into highly theatrical comedy.
