EARLY LIFE AND LITERARY CAREER Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist whose work explored love, faith, desire, loneliness, political turmoil and mortality with unusual depth and precision. Born in Montreal in 1934 and raised within the city’s Jewish community, Cohen began writing poetry while still young. Before entering music, he had already established himself as a significant literary figure through poetry collections including Let Us Compare Mythologies and The Spice-Box of Earth, as well as the novels The Favourite Game and Beautiful Losers. FROM POETRY TO SONGWRITING Cohen turned seriously toward songwriting during the 1960s, eventually moving to New York and becoming connected with the emerging folk scene. His debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, was released in 1967 and introduced the restrained, literary style that would define his early music. Songs such as “Suzanne,” “Sisters of Mercy” and “So Long, Marianne” combined acoustic arrangements with carefully constructed lyrics influenced by poetry, biblical imagery, personal relationships and Cohen’s experiences on the Greek island of Hydra. MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT Across albums including Songs from a Room, Songs of Love and Hate and New Skin for the Old Ceremony, Cohen developed a stark form of singer-songwriter folk centred on his low voice and emotionally complex storytelling. His music gradually expanded beyond acoustic folk, incorporating orchestration, rock instrumentation, gospel singers, electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Albums such as I’m Your Man and The Future introduced a darker electronic sound, pairing programmed arrangements with observations about romance, spirituality, social decline and political uncertainty. SPIRITUALITY AND LATER CAREER Religion and spiritual searching remained central throughout Cohen’s life and work. His lyrics drew heavily from Jewish scripture and liturgy, while his long involvement with Zen Buddhism eventually led him to spend several years at Mount Baldy Zen Center in California. Rather than treating these traditions as simple answers, Cohen used them to examine doubt, devotion, suffering, forgiveness and the contradictions between physical desire and spiritual discipline. After spending several years away from public performance, Cohen returned to touring in 2008 and experienced one of the most celebrated late-career revivals in modern music. His final period produced the albums Old Ideas, Popular Problems and You Want It Darker, on which his increasingly deep voice and minimal arrangements gave his reflections on ageing and death an especially powerful character. You Want It Darker was released only weeks before his death in November 2016. LEGACY Leonard Cohen is regarded as one of the most influential songwriters of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His compositions have been recorded by thousands of artists across folk, rock, pop, jazz and classical music. “Hallelujah,” initially overlooked after its release, became one of the most widely interpreted songs in popular music. Cohen’s wider catalogue, including “Bird on the Wire,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Everybody Knows” and “Anthem,” continues to influence musicians, writers and poets around the world. His work is distinguished by its combination of literary craftsmanship, spiritual inquiry, dry humour and emotional honesty. Rather than separating sacred and secular experience, Cohen repeatedly placed devotion, sexuality, despair and redemption beside one another. This tension became the foundation of an artistic career that lasted more than five decades and established him as both a major literary voice and a defining figure in modern songwriting.
