Βιογραφικό

Active Member are one of the foundational groups of Greek hip-hop and the creators of Low Bap, a musical and cultural current that grew from the industrial landscape of Perama into one of the most distinctive movements in modern Greek popular music. Formed in June 1992 around B.D. Foxmoor, the artistic name of Michalis Mytakidis, and DJ MCD, the group appeared at a time when hip-hop in Greek was still an emerging language rather than an established scene. Their history would eventually stretch far beyond that of a conventional rap group: records, concerts, independent production, radio, publishing, festivals, documentaries and a network of affiliated artists gradually turned Active Member into the centre of an entire cultural ecosystem. Their first album, *Diamartyria*, was independently released through Freestyle Productions in 1993. It is widely cited in Greek music history as the first Greek hip-hop LP, although the wider early history of rap in Greece contains earlier hip-hop-influenced recordings and remains more complicated than a single “first” can comfortably express. What is beyond dispute is the album’s importance: Active Member were working in Greek, independently and with extremely limited technical resources at a moment when there was almost no established infrastructure for this kind of music in the country. The group expanded during its early years with figures including X-Ray, Real D and DJ MCD, while *Stin Ora Ton Skion* followed in 1994. Those records established the rough foundations of an aesthetic that would soon become much more clearly defined: heavy sample-based production, slower and weightier rhythms, dense language and a refusal to separate music from the social environment in which it was created. The decisive breakthrough arrived in 1995. Active Member signed with Warner Music, becoming widely regarded as the first Greek hip-hop group to enter a multinational record-label structure, and released *To Megalo Kolpo*. Songs such as “Akou Mana” and “Prosfygas” brought them to an audience far beyond the small underground community from which they had emerged. During this period, B.D. Foxmoor began using the term **Low Bap** to describe the path that Active Member were following. Low Bap was never simply a technical genre defined by a particular tempo. Musically, it often favoured slower, heavy rhythms, deep bass, atmospheric loops and a production language built from samples and musical fragments drawn from an unusually broad field: jazz, soul, rock, progressive music, traditional forms, orchestral material, dub and anything else that could serve the emotional structure of a song. More important was the relationship between the music and the word. The verse was expected to carry weight, to come from experience and to remain connected to everyday life rather than reproduce imported poses or themes detached from the social reality around the artist. That philosophy transformed Low Bap from a description of the Active Member sound into something much larger. Through Freestyle Productions, and later other independent structures, they helped create space for new MCs, DJs, producers, writers and groups. Festivals, radio broadcasts, publications, gatherings, concerts and local crews became part of the same network. Perama was not merely the group’s place of origin; the port, shipyards, working-class neighbourhoods and surrounding industrial landscape became part of the imagery and moral geography of their work. The late 1990s and early 2000s produced some of the most important records in the Active Member catalogue. *Apo Ton Topo Tis Fygis* arrived in 1996, followed by *Mythoi Tou Valtou* in 1998, *Meres Paraxenes, Thavmasies Meres* in 2000, *Ston Kairo Tou Allokotou Fovou* in 2001 and *Perasma St' Akroneiro* in 2002. Across these records the group moved increasingly beyond the basic vocabulary of early hip-hop production. Songs became longer, more atmospheric and sometimes almost cinematic, while acoustic instruments, unusual samples, spoken passages and collaborations broadened the palette without weakening the central importance of rhythm and language. Michalis Mytakidis, born in 1967 and known as B.D. Foxmoor, has remained the only constant presence across the entire history of Active Member. He is the group's principal writer, producer, conceptual force and one of the defining voices of Greek-language hip-hop. His delivery is immediately recognisable: low, rough, deliberate and frequently closer to rhythmic narration than technical showmanship. He has never treated speed or verbal gymnastics as ends in themselves. The voice functions as another piece of percussion, but the priority remains meaning. His role, however, should not erase the fact that Active Member have always been shaped by collaborators and changing line-ups. X-Ray made major lyrical and creative contributions during an important period of the group’s development. Real D and DJ MCD belong to its formative history, while DJ Booker became part of the group during the following era. Sadahzinia, Giolanta Tsiampokalou, had been connected to Active Member since the 1990s and became an official member in the early 2000s, eventually forming with Foxmoor one of the longest-running and most recognisable versions of the group. Her writing, voice and presence brought a distinct perspective to the catalogue rather than merely functioning as an extension of Foxmoor’s work. The Foxmoor–Sadahzinia period produced another substantial run of recordings. *Fiera* appeared in 2004, followed by *Blah-Blasphemy* in 2005. In 2006 Active Member released the ambitious *Skieratsa* package, a three-disc project built around *Blah-Blasphemy 2*, *Vathyskiota* and *Apnoia*. *Ap' Tis Ftiaxis Mas Ta Lathia* followed through the independent 8ctagon period in 2009, and *Ston Vouvon Tin Eschatia* arrived in 2011. *Arsenali* continued the sequence in 2012, while *Cosmos Alivas* represented another major late-period work as the band approached more than two decades of continuous activity. By this stage, the importance of Active Member could no longer be measured only through albums. They had constructed a remarkably self-contained cultural world around their music: independent labels, production work for other artists, live events, Low Bap festivals and sessions, books, essays, radio broadcasts, documentaries, visual projects and collaborations reaching well outside rap. Their relationship with their audience was similarly unusual. Listeners were rarely treated simply as consumers of records; the language surrounding Low Bap consistently stressed participation, personal responsibility, memory, resistance and community. In 2015, after twenty-three years, B.D. Foxmoor and Sadahzinia announced that the Active Member cycle was coming to an end. A final tour culminated at the OAKA Olympic Velodrome on 7 November 2015, a concert later documented through the *Outro* live release. At the time, the farewell appeared genuinely definitive. It was not. Active Member returned to live activity and recording, with *Zaliki* arriving in December 2017. The enormous forty-five-track double album did not behave like the cautious comeback of a band preserving its legacy. Instead, it demonstrated the same excessive productivity that had characterised much of their history. *Fryktoria* followed in 2020, while the group marked thirty years of activity in 2022. That anniversary also formalised a generational transition that had in reality been developing for years. Sotiris Mytakidis, known as **LES, Logos Ergou Skia or Ramon**, became an official member of Active Member in 2022. The son of B.D. Foxmoor had already participated in hundreds of Active Member concerts since childhood and developed his own identity as a rapper, producer, sound engineer and sound designer. His entry into the group therefore represented less the arrival of an outsider than the recognition of someone who had grown up inside its musical environment. The newer period has produced another unusually dense body of work. *Mythoi Tou Valtou II* arrived in November 2023, deliberately reopening a title connected to one of the group’s defining 1990s albums without simply attempting to recreate it. *Logos Ergou Skia II*, co-credited to Active Member and LES, followed in 2024. The collaborative releases *Divolon* and *To Moiroharti* appeared during 2025, while 2026 became one of the most prolific recording years in the group's history, producing *Ta Sigirismena*, *Premura*, the *Rec'N'Play OST*, the two *Re-mentals* volumes and the dub-focused *Anadromon (A Dub Journey)*, alongside a series of vinyl-format EP releases. The *Rec'N'Play* project also extended Active Member's history into cinema. Released as a musical documentary in 2025, the film is built around B.D. Foxmoor rhythmically narrating the history that led from his earliest experiments with tapes and hip-hop culture in the 1980s through the creation and long journey of Active Member. The ninety-one-minute film was conceived as the first part of a wider trilogy, while its soundtrack appeared in 2026. It functions less as a conventional documentary assembled from talking heads than as an autobiographical musical testimony, with memory itself treated almost as another instrument. Foxmoor's enormous lyrical output has also increasingly been discussed outside the conventional limits of rap. In 2023 an independent cultural initiative launched a public petition seeking support for his eventual proposal for the Nobel Prize in Literature. The campaign should not be confused with an official Nobel nomination, but its existence illustrates the unusual way part of the Active Member audience understands his work: not simply as song lyrics, but as a sustained body of writing spanning decades. More than three decades after their formation, Active Member occupy a peculiar position in Greek music. They are pioneers of Greek-language hip-hop, but their history cannot be reduced to being “first.” They created their own terminology when the existing terminology felt insufficient, built independent structures when the established industry offered little space, repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt their own line-up, announced an ending and then returned, and continued releasing new material long after nostalgia alone could have sustained their concerts. Low Bap became their most obvious legacy, but the deeper legacy is the idea behind the name Active Member itself: art as participation rather than observation. Their catalogue repeatedly asks the listener not merely to agree, admire or consume, but to remain conscious of the world around them and of their own position within it. That combination of music, language, place, memory and stubborn independence is what has allowed Active Member to remain not simply an old Greek rap group, but one of the most substantial and enduring cultural projects produced by the country's hip-hop generation.
